Best for: Best for Czech-language search results ranked by a homegrown index that has out-competed Google locally for two decades

The verdict

Reviewed by Matthis Duarte · checked 2026-09-05 · how we check

Seznam.cz is one of the very few places in Europe where a locally built search engine has genuinely competed with Google on its own terms rather than being a Bing-licensing wrapper — the company built and maintains its own search index and ranking for Czech-language content, alongside a full portal of email, maps, classifieds and shopping comparison services, plus a dedicated mobile browser app. Ownership is unusually clean for a company of its scale: founder Ivo Lukačovič sold a minority stake to foreign investors in 2000 and again brought in the funds Tiger Holding Four and Miura in 2007, then bought back their combined 30% stake in a roughly 1-billion-koruna transaction in January 2016, making him sole owner again. For Czech speakers who want search relevance tuned to local content and a company that answers to a domestic founder rather than a foreign shareholder register, Seznam is a rare, still-viable non-Google, non-US default.

What you get, what you give up

What you get

  • Maintains its own search index rather than licensing Bing or Google results, one of the few European engines that can say that
  • 100% owned by Czech founder Ivo Lukačovič since the January 2016 buyback of foreign investors' 30% stake

What you give up

  • Search quality and index depth are strongest for Czech-language content; international or English-language queries are noticeably weaker than Google's
  • The browser app and portal ecosystem are built primarily for a Czech-speaking audience, with limited localization value outside that market

What Seznam actually does

Seznam.cz is the largest Czech-language internet portal, built around a search engine with its own index and ranking system, complemented by:

  • Email
  • Maps (Mapy.com)
  • A business directory (Firmy.cz)
  • A shopping comparison tool (Zboží.cz)
  • A video/streaming service

It also ships a dedicated Seznam browser app for mobile, giving Czech users a full alternative stack to Google's without leaving a domestic company's ecosystem.

Ivo Lukačovič started the company in 1996 with roughly 50,000 Czech koruna of his own savings, launching it as the country's first web portal, pairing a search index with an online business directory from day one; email under the @seznam.cz domain followed in 1998, years before Gmail existed.

The core product

The search engine at the center of Seznam is the differentiator: unlike most alternative search products in Europe, which license results from Bing or Google under the hood, Seznam has invested in and maintained its own crawler and index for Czech-language content for over two decades, and it has held a meaningfully larger share of Czech search traffic than most non-US search engines manage anywhere in the world against Google.

Around that core search product sits a full portal:

  • Email
  • Calendar
  • News
  • Weather
  • Maps
  • A jobs board
  • A real-estate listing service

That combination is designed to keep users inside one company's tools for most day-to-day internet tasks. The Seznam browser app extends the same search and portal experience to mobile, positioned as a lightweight, ad-supported alternative to using Chrome or Safari with Google set as the default.

What's new or notable

The most significant fact about Seznam for a European-ownership directory is its ownership history: founder Ivo Lukačovič sold a minority stake to a foreign investor back in 2000, then brought in foreign investment funds Tiger Holding Four and Miura in 2007.

In January 2016, Lukačovič bought back their combined 30% stake for approximately 1 billion Czech koruna, returning the company to full Czech ownership under his control. Company leadership at the time framed the move explicitly around demonstrating independence and stability after years of successfully competing against Google in the domestic market — a rare case of a European search company both surviving against Google locally and consolidating back to fully domestic ownership rather than drifting toward foreign acquisition.

That competitive position has nonetheless eroded over time, which is useful context rather than a reason to dismiss it: Seznam held around 43% of Czech search share in May 2012 against Google's 55%, a stronger local showing than almost any national search engine manages against Google anywhere in the world, but that had fallen to roughly 26% by the end of 2018 as Google's share climbed past 70%.

Rather than retreating, Seznam kept building around its search base, launching its own news service, Seznam Zprávy, in 2016 and its own television operation, Televize Seznam, in 2018, and it now runs roughly 30 different web services under one account, including Sklik, its self-serve advertising platform comparable to Google's own ad network.

Who should use Seznam

Great fit if…

  • You search primarily in Czech — the homegrown index is tuned specifically for Czech-language relevance in a way licensed-index competitors aren't.
  • You want a full portal, not just search — email, maps and classifieds are integrated rather than separate sign-ups.
  • You value domestic, single-founder ownership — Seznam is one of the cleanest ownership stories in this category.

Skip it if…

  • You mostly search in English or need global result depth — the index's strength is concentrated in Czech-language content.
  • You're outside the Czech market — most of the surrounding portal services (jobs, real estate, classifieds) have little relevance outside Czechia.

Pricing in detail

Seznam's search engine, portal services and browser app are entirely free to use, funded by advertising rather than subscriptions, with no premium search tier.

SeznamFree — €0Search, email, maps, classifieds, shopping comparison, browser app for Android/iOS

Where it falls short

  • Weak outside its home language — international search relevance lags behind what the Czech-language index delivers.
  • Ecosystem services are Czech-market-specific — jobs, real estate and classifieds tools have essentially no use for non-Czech users.

Privacy & data

As an advertising-funded portal, Seznam collects usage data to serve ads within its own ecosystem, similar to any large ad-supported search company; it is not positioned as a privacy-first product the way some other candidates in this category are, but it operates entirely under Czech and EU data protection law with domestic Czech ownership.

How we checked this

Verified against seznam.cz's live portal, Radio Prague International's report on the January 2016 buyout of Tiger Holding Four and Miura's 30% stake, and the Czech Wikipedia entry on Seznam.cz prohlížeč confirming the dedicated browser app, all checked 2026-09-05.

What we check on every tool

Five things get checked on every tool, free or paid, and the answers are printed on the page with the date they were checked. Nothing is hidden because it looks unflattering — a tool with a short trial is listed exactly like any other, and labelled so you know what you are signing up for.

  • 2Does it expire? Whether the free version stops working after a set number of days.
  • 3Where's the wall? Whether the free tier's real limit — an advert, a quota, or a feature held back for the paid plan — is named, not left vague.
