What Sixt actually does
Sixt is a German mobility group offering two things through one app: traditional car rental from airport and city locations, and SIXT share, a per-minute and per-day self-service car-sharing fleet in a handful of German and Dutch cities. The company, Sixt SE, is headquartered in Pullach near Munich and has been run by the founding Sixt family for generations — Erich Sixt chairs the supervisory board, with his sons Alexander and Konstantin serving as co-CEOs. Unusually for a company of its scale, the family retains roughly 58% of voting rights through its common shares, giving Sixt a concentration of control that most large European rental and mobility groups — typically owned by private equity or dispersed institutional investors — don't have.
The core product
Classic Sixt rental works like any major agency: book a car category, dates, and pickup location, and pay a rate that varies by city, season, and vehicle tier, with optional extras like additional drivers, GPS, or full insurance. SIXT share, the newer product, is genuinely different — pick up a car from a designated spot in the app, drive it by the minute or switch to an hourly or daily package, and return it to a valid parking zone within the operating area. Fuel or charging, basic liability insurance, and inner-city parking fees are already included in the per-minute rate, so there's no separate reconciliation after the trip.
What's new or notable
Sixt has kept expanding SIXT share's vehicle categories and cities, and continues to bundle its rental, car-sharing, and ride-hailing partnerships (Sixt Ride) under one loyalty program, so frequent users accumulate benefits across products rather than starting from zero in each one.
Who should use Sixt
Great fit if…
- You need both a one-hour city hop and a multi-day rental — one account covers SIXT share for the errand and classic rental for the weekend trip.
- You care who actually controls the company — Sixt SE is majority-controlled by an identifiable founding family rather than a private-equity consortium.
- You want fuel and insurance bundled by default — SIXT share's per-minute price already includes fuel/charging and basic coverage.
Skip it if…
- You need per-minute car sharing outside Germany or the Netherlands — SIXT share's footprint is far smaller than Sixt's classic rental network.
- You're chasing the cheapest possible rental — Sixt's premium and luxury vehicle categories carry rates above budget-focused competitors.
Pricing in detail
Classic rental pricing is fully dynamic: it depends on pickup city, dates, vehicle category, and how far in advance you book, so there is no fixed list price. SIXT share in Germany starts from roughly €0.15 per minute (observed rate, Munich/Berlin/Hamburg, September 2026), with a per-journey unlock fee of about €1.95, or fixed-price day packages starting around €19.99 for one day up to roughly €319.99 for 21 days depending on vehicle category. Hourly packages start from about €7.99. Fuel/charging, basic loss-damage coverage (with a standard deductible, reducible for an extra per-minute charge), and inner-city parking are included in the per-minute and package rates. These are observed prices at a point in time, not fixed tariffs — SIXT share pricing is dynamic by time, location, and vehicle model.
| Plan | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Classic rental | Fully dynamic by city/dates/category (no fixed price) | Vehicle rental from Sixt locations, optional insurance and extras |
| SIXT share, per-minute | From ~€0.15/min + ~€1.95 unlock fee (observed, Germany, Sept 2026) | Fuel/charging, basic insurance, inner-city parking included |
| SIXT share, day package | From ~€19.99/day (observed, Sept 2026) | Fixed daily rate, category-dependent, fuel and basic insurance included |
Where it falls short
- SIXT share is geographically limited — it operates in select German and Dutch cities only, so it's not a Europe-wide car-sharing option the way classic rental is a Europe-wide rental option.
- No single price to compare — both products use dynamic, location- and time-dependent pricing, making it hard to budget in advance without checking the app for your exact dates and city.
Privacy & data
Sixt SE is a German company subject to the EU GDPR and Germany's implementing law (BDSG). The app collects location data for car-sharing pickup/return and journey tracking, plus driving-licence and payment data for rental verification, governed by Sixt's published privacy policy rather than a separate consumer trust center.
How we checked this
SIXT share per-minute and package pricing verified against sixt.com/share/rates/germany/ on 2026-09-05. Shareholder structure (family voting-rights concentration, leadership roles) cross-checked against Sixt SE investor-relations materials (about.sixt.com) on the same date.
What you get, what you give up
What you get
- A single account and app spans traditional rental counters and per-minute urban car sharing, letting a trip start with a one-way city hop and continue as a multi-day rental
- Sixt SE's ownership is concentrated in the founding family (~58% of voting rights) rather than a private-equity or sovereign-fund consortium, which is unusual among Europe's large mobility groups
What you give up
- Per-minute car sharing (SIXT share) is only available in a limited set of German and Dutch cities, not across all the countries where classic Sixt rental operates
- Classic rental pricing is fully dynamic by location, dates, and vehicle category, so there is no single fixed price to quote
