What ElevenReader actually does

ElevenReader is a text-to-speech reading app from ElevenLabs, the AI voice and audio company founded in 2022 by two Polish entrepreneurs. It takes articles, PDFs and ePubs you feed it and reads them back in one of more than 1,000 AI-generated voices, and it also gives you access to a standalone library of audiobooks narrated in synthetic voices. The pitch is simple: turn anything you'd normally have to sit down and read into something you can listen to on a commute, during a workout, or while doing chores.

The core product

At its core, ElevenReader is a listening app rather than a writing or translation tool. You import or paste in text — a news article, a PDF report, an ePub book, or a page grabbed directly from the web using the Chrome extension — and the app converts it to speech using ElevenLabs' voice models. Playback goes up to 4x speed, and there's a sleep timer and bookmarking for people who listen to long-form material over several sessions. Progress syncs between the iOS app, the Android app, the web player and the Chrome extension, so you can start an article on your laptop and pick it back up on your phone without losing your place. Alongside personal documents, the app also bundles a library of audiobooks read in AI voices, which on the free plan is limited to public-domain and other freely licensed titles rather than current commercial releases.

What's new or notable

The most notable thing about ElevenReader, compared with a lot of "AI reading" apps, is that its free tier is not a stripped-down trial. Ten hours of listening a month across the full 1,000-plus voice library is enough for most people to read a handful of long articles or get partway through a book every month without ever touching a credit card. The paid Ultra tier, in turn, is a genuine upgrade rather than a paywall for basic functionality: it removes the monthly hour cap entirely, unlocks a premium audiobook catalogue described as more than 200,000 titles (with a monthly allowance of listening hours built in), adds offline downloads for listening without a data connection, and lets you generate a custom AI voice from your own voice samples. Priority customer support and smart file-import handling round out the Ultra tier.

Who should use ElevenReader

Great fit if…

• You read or skim a lot of articles and PDFs. The free 10-hour allowance and 1,000+ voice library cover casual-to-moderate reading without any cost.
• You want a book read aloud while commuting or exercising. The public-domain audiobook library on the free tier, or the much larger Ultra catalogue, both work for hands-free listening.
• You already use ElevenLabs' voices for other purposes. ElevenReader shares the same underlying voice technology, so the listening experience is familiar and generally natural-sounding.
• You switch between phone, tablet and desktop during the day. Progress syncing across the iOS app, Android app, web player and Chrome extension means you rarely lose your spot.

Skip it if…

• You listen for more than 10 hours a month. Regular, daily listeners will burn through the free allowance well before the month ends and effectively need Ultra to keep going.
• You want current bestsellers, not public-domain titles, without paying. The free plan's audiobook selection is limited to free and public-domain works; the 200,000+ title premium catalogue sits behind Ultra.
• You need offline listening or a custom voice on a budget. Both of those features are Ultra-exclusive, and Ultra is billed only in US dollars, which adds currency conversion for anyone paying in euros or pounds.

Pricing in detail

ElevenReader has two tiers: a genuinely usable free plan and a single paid Ultra subscription that removes its limits.

Where it falls short

• The free plan's 10-hour cap is easy to hit. A regular listener — someone working through a novel or several long articles a week — can use up the monthly allowance well before the month is out, with no way to top it up without upgrading.
• The good audiobook catalogue and offline mode cost extra. The 200,000+ title premium library and the ability to download for offline listening are both reserved for Ultra; the free tier is limited to free public-domain and freely licensed titles streamed online.
• Custom voices and priority support are paywalled too. Anyone who wants ElevenReader to read in a voice they've created themselves, or wants faster support responses, has to be on Ultra — there's no lighter-weight paid add-on for just those features.
• Billing is in US dollars only. Even though ElevenLabs describes its London office as its European hub and centre for worldwide operations, Ultra is priced and charged in USD, so European subscribers absorb whatever currency conversion their card issuer applies rather than paying a fixed euro or pound price.

Privacy & data

ElevenReader's public pages focus on features and pricing rather than spelling out, in plain language, whether text or documents you feed into the app are used to train ElevenLabs' voice or language models, or how long that content is retained. Given that ElevenLabs' core business is voice AI, and that ElevenReader routes the text you want read aloud through that same technology, anyone reading sensitive, confidential or personal documents through the app should check ElevenLabs' current privacy policy and terms directly before relying on it, rather than assume EU-level data handling by default. We did not find a clear, specific commitment on this point during our check, so we're not claiming one here.

How we checked this

This review is based on ElevenReader's own pricing page (elevenreader.io/pricing), checked on 4 September 2026, cross-referenced with the app's public marketing pages describing free-plan and Ultra-plan features. We did not conduct hands-on testing of audio quality or listening-time accuracy; figures for listening hours, voice counts and the audiobook catalogue size are as stated by ElevenLabs on its own site at the time of checking, and may change as the company updates its plans.
