73 out of 100. Each of the five criteria is judged on its own, 0 to 20, and the five add up — never measured against another product. How we score.

What you get, what you give up

What you get

  • One application covers RAW development, cataloguing/DAM, layer-based editing and HDR merging, so nothing needs to be split across separate apps
  • Local, on-device processing of the photo library rather than mandatory cloud upload
  • A 7-day full-feature trial with no card required before subscribing
  • Same EUR subscription price whether you pick monthly or discounted annual billing

What you give up

  • No macOS version at all — Windows only
  • No dedicated mobile app for editing on the go
  • No native panorama-stitching tool
  • Optional cloud storage/sync is a separate add-on, not bundled by default

What it does

Zoner Photo Studio X (recently rebranded in places as "Zoner Studio") is an all-in-one photo application from Zoner Software a.s., a company headquartered in Brno, Czech Republic, that has been building photography software since 1993.

Rather than splitting RAW development, photo management and pixel editing across separate programs, it combines the following in one Windows application:

  • RAW processing
  • A photo catalog/digital-asset-manager
  • Layer-based editing with masks and adjustment layers
  • HDR merging

Zoner's own product pages describe fast RAW loading, an all-in-one workspace ("everything in one place"), and true HDR editing as core selling points, alongside an optional cloud add-on called Zoner Photo Cloud for backup and multi-device access.

Who should use it

Zoner Photo Studio X is aimed at enthusiast and semi-professional photographers on Windows who want a single application to go from a memory card full of RAW files to finished, retouched, organised images — without buying a separate cataloguing tool and a separate pixel editor. It fits people who shoot regularly enough to need a real photo library (search, keywords, ratings) but who don't want an ongoing multi-app subscription stack. Because it is Windows-only, it is not an option for Mac-based photographers, and because there is no mobile app, it is not built for on-the-go editing from a phone.

Typical use cases

  • Importing and culling a shoot from a RAW-shooting camera
  • Building a searchable personal photo library with keywords and star ratings
  • Layer-based retouching and adjustment-layer edits on top of RAW conversions
  • Merging bracketed exposures into HDR images

Pricing in detail

Pricing was confirmed directly on Zoner's own German-market checkout page (zoner.com/de/kaufen/), where prices are shown in EUR:

  • Single-user annual license — €49.00/year
  • Family annual license (multiple users) — €78.00/year
  • Free trial — 7 days, full feature set, no payment card required

Monthly billing is also offered but costs more in total than committing to the annual plan, per Zoner's own pricing page, which cites roughly 16% savings for annual versus monthly billing. Add-on products such as photography e-books are sold separately at their own EUR prices.

Where it falls short

  • The single biggest limitation is platform support — Zoner Photo Studio X runs on Windows 10/11 only, with no macOS build, so it's a non-starter for Mac photographers.
  • No companion mobile app for editing or culling on a phone or tablet, and no built-in panorama stitching tool as far as the product's own feature pages describe.
  • Cloud backup and cross-device sync require a separate product — Zoner Photo Cloud isn't included by default, so photographers who want automatic off-site backup need to budget for it separately.
  • Migrating a large existing library takes real time — moving ratings, keywords and edit history in from another cataloguing system is more than a "10-minute install," proportional to how large and how tagged your existing library already is.

Privacy & data

Zoner Photo Studio X processes photos locally on the user's own computer as a desktop application, rather than requiring images to be uploaded to a server to be edited — the core editing, RAW development and catalog features work entirely offline. The optional Zoner Photo Cloud add-on, if a user chooses to enable it, syncs and backs up images to Zoner's own cloud infrastructure; anyone who wants to keep their library fully local can simply not use that add-on.

As a Czech company operating in the EU, Zoner is subject to the GDPR for any account and billing data it collects. That distinction matters most for the optional cloud add-on, since it is the only part of the product where photo files themselves leave the user's own machine; the core desktop application does not need network access to import, edit, catalogue or export images once it has been installed and licensed, which is a meaningfully different privacy posture from a cloud-first editing tool.

How we checked this

Company location and history (Brno, Czech Republic, founded 1993, international branches in Germany, the US, Slovakia, Spain and Japan) were confirmed on Zoner's own Czech-language "About us" page. No record of a foreign takeover or change of control was found in the course of this check; Zoner continues to operate under its original Czech corporate name, Zoner software a.s. Pricing in EUR was verified directly on Zoner's German-market purchase page rather than taken from a converted or estimated figure. Platform support (Windows-only, no macOS) and feature claims (RAW editing, cataloguing, layers, HDR, optional cloud add-on) were confirmed from Zoner's own English-language product homepage.

What we check on every tool

Five things get checked on every tool, free or paid, and the answers are printed on the page with the date they were checked. Nothing is hidden because it looks unflattering — a tool with a short trial is listed exactly like any other, and labelled so you know what you are signing up for.

  • 1Card up front? Whether you have to hand over card details before you can use it at all.
  • 2Does it expire? Whether the free version stops working after a set number of days.
  • 3Where's the wall? Whether the free tier's real limit — an advert, a quota, or a feature held back for the paid plan — is named, not left vague.
  • 4Easy to cancel? How many steps it takes to stop paying, and whether it auto-renews quietly.
  • 5Still maintained? Whether the project has shipped anything in the last twelve months.
